Associate Principal Informatician

The Associate Principal Informatician is accountable for directing the application of scientific domain-specific knowledge (in chemo, bioinformatics) and/or clinical disease area expertise, specialized data processing techniques, analytical and machine learning capabilities to extract scientific insight and hypotheses from data.   The role drives the application of foundational and innovative techniques to coordinate the delivery of innovative solutions which drive decision-making in pre-clinical, development and post-market activities.  The role provides coaching, task management and support to Associate Informaticians promoting best practice across multiple domains, and/or stakeholder groups.

Typical Accountabilities

• Coordinate the implementation of novel informatics solutions grounded in a specialized area (bio, chemo and clinical informatics) designed to drive the interrogation of datasets for insights in scientific and clinical application areas within defined project scope.  This includes integrating complex data from multiple  sources and modalities (eg signal pathway analysis, cellular characterization, multi-omics, chemical characteristics, real world evidence, clinical trials).
• Using domain-specific understanding, translates unstructured, complex scientific and clinical problems into the appropriate data problem, and informatics solutions
• Design and implement computational and analytical methods to solve problems in the relevant scientific or clinical area.
• Researches and develops advanced tools and approaches which guide and shape decision-making within the project scope
• Coordinate expert Informatics research, including establishment of hypotheses that can be approached using computational methods and tools. Present or publish findings for conferences and in peer reviewed journals.
• Build and manage effective relationships with wide range of stakeholders (such as clinicians and biological researchers) to ensure utilization and value of information resources and services.  Clearly and objectively communicate results, as well as their associated uncertainties and limitations
• Lead the develop and implementation of tools and algorithms in a manner which meets regulatory and evidential requirements within project scope
• Develop and apply ongoing knowledge and awareness in trends, standard methodology and new developments in analytics and data science to shape solutions
• Review and develop working practices to ensure that data science work is delivered to robust quality standards
• Leads small (2-3 person) data science projects of defined scope
• Provide training and advice to collaborators on optimal use of key data, platforms and the appropriate use of informatics

Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

• Bachelors Degree (or equivalent numbers of years of experience)  in mathematics, computer science, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, computational biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience with relevant application domain (eg cell and molecular biology, disease progression and clinical treatment, RWE, biochemistry)
• Good understanding of the design, development, optimization, and scaling of informatics applications and solutions
• In-depth demonstrated experience in the modelling of complex datasets in the relevant informatics application domains
• Experience of manipulating and analysing large high dimensionality unstructured datasets, drawing conclusions, defining recommended actions, and reporting results across stakeholders
• Excellent written and verbal communication, business analysis, and consultancy skills

Desirable

• Master or PhD degree qualification in mathematics, computer science, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, computational biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• Comfortable working in high performance computing or cloud environment
• Proven track record of publishing relevant results and tools in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other scientific proceedings.
• Experience in life sciences and healthcare
• Experience in novel methods development and application
